Changes in Society
When Peter got back from Europe he changed the society of Russia greatly. He made them wear western European clothes, forced them to shave their beards or pay a fine. Women, who had always been excluded from social gatherings were ordered to attend parties and he brought in foreigners to train them. While constructing the city of St. Petersburg it cost Russia 25,000-100,000 of its people. Overall one of the main issues he created in society was the dangerous splits the he brought between those who excepted the Europeans ways and those who clung to the traditional values and ways.
European clothing
Nobles:
During Peters reign he used privileges and force to make nobles accept government service and forced them to accept the ways of western Europe. He made nobles work as civil officers or join military service. He also created a class of nobles called dvorianie, who in return for government service were allowed to own hereditary land estate. A nobles duty to czar started at age 15 and went on until death. Nobles were also given full control over the serfs (peasants). And lastly nobels didn't have to pay any taxes.
Middle Class
To increase the size of the middle class he tried to recruit men from the lower class. From there he would get them a job. Then he would promote them to a higher position in their job. For a reward for getting promoted he would give them land thus making the middle class larger.
Lower Class
In order to increase government income and efficiency Peter the Great increased tax laws. Just like France he made the poorest class (lower class) pay all the taxes.
